Netflix Binge Watch: The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy is a new programme thats just arrived to Netflix which is a series based on a collection of comics and graphic novels created and written by My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way and I decided to watch it as soon as I saw the trailer. The main story of this programme is how one day in 1989, 43 infants were inexplicably born to random, unconnected women all over the world, who did not show any signs of pregnancy at the beginning of the day. Seven of the infants were adopted by billionaire industrialist, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who treats the ‘Umbrella Academy and prepares these children to save the world as they were all born with different but special powers.

Throughout the beginning of the programme you assume that only six of the seven have powers has the seventh one was kept separate and told her whole childhood she was not special like her ‘siblings’.

Fast forward to present time you find out that one of the seven died, so the remaining six come back together to solve the mysterious death of their ‘Father’, Sir Reginald Hargreeves. As well as this they are trying to save the world from ending in an apocalypse. Their brother, Number Five, comes back from the future where he as been for over a decade now with the information of an apocalypse. However he has no idea why or how this is happening or who even starts it.

Following the programme you see how the family who should be stronger together is falling apart and can handle stand each other, so as the end of the world comes closer they have a lot at stake. They make mistakes and soon find out that together is how they can save the world. However, when finding out that their seventh sibling, Number Seven, does actually have a power even though throughout all these years they thought she didn’t, they find out it is she who causes the apocalypse. Her powers are controlled by her emotions and as they lock her away thinking it will help her and save the world, they soon find out it was the wrong idea. As she breaks herself out and becomes the power within her and soon the end of the world starts.

This programme is very gripping and powerful. For someone who loves marvel or DC, this will be a great programme for you to watch. It’s about a super, dysfunctional family who learns that despite their difference, working together is the only way for them to save the world.
